Bernstein Sees Stablecoins Becoming Internet’s Money Rail Under New Law

Bernstein, a leading global investment research and management firm, has released a report stating that stablecoins could become the core "money rail" of the internet economy following the implementation of a proposed U.S. regulatory framework. According to the firm, the new legislative clarity around stablecoins would encourage innovation while ensuring greater transparency, accountability, and stability within the digital asset ecosystem.

Stablecoins cryptocurrencies pegged to stable assets like the U.S. dollar are increasingly being viewed as critical tools for internet-native payments. Bernstein’s analysts argue that these digital currencies offer the ideal blend of programmability, instant settlement, and low transaction costs, aligning perfectly with the demands of online commerce and decentralized finance (DeFi) applications.

The proposed law, currently under review in the U.S. Congress, aims to create a clear regulatory perimeter for stablecoin issuers, including requirements for reserve backing, audit disclosures, and licensing. Bernstein suggests that such oversight could help eliminate "bad actors" while giving a green light to credible fintech and crypto companies to scale their stablecoin operations safely.

"Just as the internet once required standardized protocols to flourish, digital money needs a strong, regulated foundation," Bernstein noted. The firm believes that with proper regulation, stablecoins can evolve into a trusted infrastructure layer, functioning as the internet’s equivalent of a universal payments highway reliable, fast, and accessible across platforms.

This shift could also pose challenges to traditional banking models, particularly in cross-border payments and remittances. Stablecoins offer near-instant global transfers, significantly undercutting the costs associated with legacy systems like SWIFT or wire transfers. As more developers integrate stablecoin payments into their platforms, the pressure on banks and legacy financial networks to innovate will increase.

The report further emphasized the growing interest from major corporations and financial institutions in stablecoin technology, including PayPal, Visa, and Circle. With broader institutional adoption and a clearer regulatory path, Bernstein predicts a significant uptick in the use of stablecoins as a core settlement mechanism in both Web3 and traditional fintech platforms.

Ultimately, if the proposed legislation passes, it could mark a turning point not just for the crypto ecosystem, but for the broader global financial landscape. Stablecoins, once seen as niche instruments, could soon become the default digital money rail powering transactions across the internet.
