Desert Turns White: Rare Snowfall in Saudi Arabia’s Northern Regions Sparks Global Awe

The snowfall was driven by a powerful cold air mass and a deep low pressure system moving down from the Mediterranean. This rare meteorological combination caused temperatures to plummet well below freezing, reaching a low of -4°C in the high-altitude areas. While the Tabuk region occasionally sees light frost, the scale and accumulation of this week's snow have been described as "historic" by local television channels.

In the Trojena highlands, which sit at an elevation of nearly 2,600 meters, the rugged terrain appeared completely draped in white. This area is already slated to become a major mountain tourism destination as part of the NEOM project, and this natural snowfall has perfectly illustrated its potential as a world-class skiing destination.

As word of the "white desert" spread, residents and tourists flocked to the northern regions to witness the phenomenon. Social media has been flooded with surreal images and videos:

The National Center for Meteorology (NCM) issued early warnings as the cold wave extended its reach. Beyond Tabuk, snow and sleet were also reported in parts of Hail, Al Majmaah, and Al Ghat, north of Riyadh. While the excitement is palpable, authorities have urged extreme caution for drivers due to icy road conditions and thick fog, which has significantly reduced visibility on major highways.

Experts suggest that while snow in northern Saudi Arabia is not entirely unprecedented, the intensity of this 2025 event highlights shifting global weather patterns. As the cold wave persists, the "winter playground" of Tabuk continues to offer a once in a generation experience for the people of the Kingdom.
